Interpretive hike with lessons in wilderness survival skills.
About tents: http://twopersontent.net
Increase your sense of security in the outdoors by learning to survive with little or no gear.  Even with a map, compass, GPS, and reliable weather forecast, some people are still forced to spend a night or longer in the outdoors with little more than a daypack.  Could you survive?

Maple Mountain is easily accessible, a great place to hike, and offers several choice sites for our lessons.  We start the hike from Maple Bay and head north for about 2 km with some superb views of Sansum Narrows and Saltspring Island.  Then it's a gradual climb of 300 m before heading south.  After the viewpoint that overlooks Maple Bay and Bird's Eye Cove, we proceed down a fairly steep grade to complete a circle route of the southeast section of Maple Mountain.  The hike lasts about 5 hours including time for breaks and lessons.

You will learn about:

  • Building Survival Shelters
  • Starting Fire with a Bow Drill
  • Finding and Purifying Water
  • Edible Wild Plants
  • Bear and Cougar Safety
  • Preventing and Treating Hypothermia
  • Use of Map, Compass, and GPS

Cost: $40/person
