Ever wonder what kind of wild plant you are looking at?  Is it an edible wild plant or a poisonous one? What bird sings that funny song? What kind of animal makes those tracks? Take a hike with Nature Experience Tours and learn about  the plants and animals of Vancouver Island.

Cowichan River Provincial Park covers about 20 km of the length of the river and contains a diversity of plants and animals. As you travel upriver, you move from the drier side of the Island with Garry Oak meadows and into the start of the rainforest with Sitka Spruce and long strands of lichen hanging from the trees.

Numerous resident birds and migrants nest along the river.  Common Mergansers, Western Tanagers, and Yellow Warblers are some of the 300 species of birds that visit the river and wetlands. Black Bears, Bald Eagles, and numerous gulls feed on spawning salmon in the fall.  River otters, mink, and beaver also use the river.
